Tell Governor Sherrill: Expand NJDEP testing!

UPDATE: On 8/11, NJDEP announced that they'll be testing outside of the site, collecting soil-gas and groundwater samples in public rights of way in neighborhoods in Keyport and Union Beach. We encourage folks to continue to reach out to Governor Sherrill’s office as we await these results. Continued public engagement will help ensure this investigation remains a priority.

The Aeromarine landfill site, a former municipal dump along Raritan Bay, has been the subject of environmental concerns for over four decades. Today, with over 400 confirmed cancer cases in an area of roughly 3,000 households, residents are calling for a full investigation into a possible cancer cluster.

New results from the first testing at the landfill in 16 years confirm that “many of the same dangerous chemicals found in 2010…are still there.” Despite decades of documented erosion and flooding the NJDEP maintains there is no pathway for human exposure, even though surrounding neighborhoods have never been tested.

Independent testing found dioxin levels at the site and a nearby residence nearly 6.5x the EPA’s trigger threshold for health exposure and follow-up testing. Dioxins are toxic, long-lasting compounds linked to serious health risks, including cancer. We are asking the state to expand testing into surrounding residential areas and include dioxins in its testing program. Keyport residents deserve to know if their homes and community are safe.
